The house with the largest repertoire in the world.
Biography
On 25 May 1869 the house on the Ringstraße opened with Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” in the presence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth. Ever since, the Vienna State Opera has been the centre of Viennese musical life and ranks among the most important opera houses in the world.
Severely damaged by bombs in March 1945, the house was gloriously reopened on 5 November 1955 with Beethoven’s “Fidelio”, an event understood around the world as a sign of life from the new Austria.
Today the Vienna State Opera stands for a repertoire unmatched by any other house: for ten months a year there is a performance almost every day, with more than 50 opera and ballet productions per season for up to 1,709 seated and 567 standing visitors. The Vienna Philharmonic recruits its members from the ranks of the house’s orchestra. Bogdan Roščić has been Director since 1 July 2020.
Künstlersekretariat Buchmann arranges engagements of singers, soloists and dancers of the Vienna State Opera for guest performances, concerts and productions.
