Founded in 1842 · self-governing · no chief conductor
Biography
There is perhaps no other ensemble more closely associated with the history and tradition of European music than the Vienna Philharmonic. The orchestra was founded on 28 March 1842, when Otto Nicolai conducted a concert of all the musicians of the Court Opera in the Grosser Redoutensaal. Vienna thereby gained its first professional concert orchestra.
Since 1933 the Vienna Philharmonic has worked without a chief conductor, inviting guest conductors for each project. The subscription concerts in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein form the artistic and financial basis of its work, complemented by the Salzburg Festival, the Mozart Week, the Summer Night Concert at Schönbrunn and the New Year’s Concert broadcast around the world.
World premieres and first performances have shaped the orchestra’s history, as has the Viennese sound, which rests on its own instruments and on a way of playing handed down from one generation to the next. Since 2018 the orchestra has trained young musicians in its own academy.
Künstlersekretariat Buchmann GmbH has organised numerous tours of the Vienna Philharmonic.
