The same training, the same standards, a voice of their own.
Biography
Since 2024 the Wiener Chormädchen have been writing a new chapter: the same training, the same standards, a voice of their own – and, after only a short time, at home on international stages.
The Vienna Girls Choir was founded as the female counterpart to the Vienna Boys Choir back in 2004. Since September 2024 the 26 dedicated girls, aged 10 to 14, have also been attending the grammar school on the Augarten campus, and since their appearance at the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert under star conductor Franz Welser-Möst at the latest, they have become widely known.
The girls are taught under the direction of Kapellmeister Stefan Foidl according to the methods of the Vienna Boys Choir and thus enjoy exactly the same training as their male colleagues: singing as a school subject, choir rehearsals, vocal training, solo rehearsals, concerts and tours.
Because voices develop differently in this age group, the boys’ and girls’ choirs do not sing in mixed formation, but there are joint appearances on special occasions – such as the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert in 2023, the reopening of the Austrian Parliament, and, since 2024, the annual Mother’s Day concert in the Vienna Musikverein.
In 2023 the Vienna Girls Choir received the Austrian Music Theatre Prize; in 2024, together with the Vienna Boys Choir, they were awarded the European Culture Prize at the Philharmonie Luxembourg.
After their first tour in spring 2025, which took them across Austria and to Germany, Slovenia, Italy and Switzerland, their first tour of China followed in April 2026. The journey of the Wiener Chormädchen has only just begun!
