Biography
The Wiener KammerOrchester (Vienna Chamber Orchestra) was founded in 1946 and ranks among Europe’s leading chamber orchestras. Over the decades, the ensemble has been shaped by countless renowned artists and conductors. Early in its history, Benjamin Britten conducted the orchestra, and artists such as Daniel Barenboim and Alfred Brendel appeared with the ensemble at a young age.
Firmly anchored in Vienna’s musical life, the orchestra presents several concert series each season at the Wiener Konzerthaus – including Sunday matinees in the Mozart Hall, the innovative “Prime Time International” in the Schubert Hall, and performances in the Great Hall.
The Wiener KammerOrchester is also a sought-after partner for opera productions. It has collaborated with Theater an der Wien and the Wiener Kammeroper for many years and became the official orchestra of the new Wiener Opernsommer Belvedere in 2024. Furthermore, it serves as orchestra-in-residence for the Liszt Festival Raiding until 2028.
The orchestra is active on an international scale, with recent tours taking it to Japan, Vietnam, Morocco, Argentina, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Germany, Romania, Greece, and many more countries.
Its programs blend Viennese tradition with contemporary openness – featuring core classical repertoire alongside musical discoveries and innovative impulses.
Chief Conductor Jan Willem de Vriend
Since the 2023/24 season, Jan Willem de Vriend has served as Chief Conductor of the Wiener KammerOrchester. The Dutch conductor is internationally acclaimed for his stylistic clarity, energetic interpretations, and historically informed approach to performance.
He regularly collaborates with major orchestras throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas. His discography includes critically acclaimed recordings of the symphonies of Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Schubert.
De Vriend’s artistic approach is defined by structural insight, rhetorical sensibility, and a strong sense of musical dialogue. Under his direction, the Wiener KammerOrchester continues to develop its unique sound and artistic identity with renewed vigor.
