Grand music theatre on the finest of strings.
Biography
The Marionette Theatre at Schönbrunn Palace has been performing in the palace’s Hofratstrakt since 1994, continuing a tradition that reaches back to the days of Maria Theresa, who already treated her guests at Schönbrunn to marionette performances.
The theatre was founded and is artistically directed by Christine Hierzer-Riedler and Werner Hierzer. Its signature production is Mozart’s “The Magic Flute”; the programme also includes fairy tales such as “Aladdin and the Magic Lamp” and musical productions from “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” to Johann Strauss, in around 400 performances a year.
Guest performances have taken the ensemble to London, Paris, New York and Hong Kong, among other cities; its puppetry technique and marionette making are listed as intangible cultural heritage.
