The Vienna Philharmonic’s programme for young talent
Biography
The common goal is to support highly gifted young Austrian musicians aged 13 to 19 on their way to a professional musical career and, in particular, to nurture the next generation of orchestral musicians.
Camerata Prima Wien is the Vienna Philharmonic’s programme for young talent. Under its chairman Daniel Froschauer the orchestra took the programme under its patronage in November 2022. Since then it has brought together highly gifted young musicians from all over Austria in chamber music ensembles and in an orchestra, coached and led by members of the Vienna Philharmonic.
Daniel Froschauer, chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic: “It is about learning the musical craft, about preserving traditions, about passing on a specific way of playing and a culture of sound, and about the exchange of experience and knowledge handed down from one generation to the next. We see it as our task to accompany our young artists for part of the way and to support them so that they can continue on their successful path.”
The idea came from Harald Krumpöck and Johannes Kostner, both violinists of the Vienna Philharmonic, together with Angelika Persterer-Ornig, who also developed the prima la musica talent programme in Vienna. Kostner took on the project management on behalf of the orchestra; the president of the supporting association is Clemens Hellsberg.
The heart of the programme is the annual music week: a week of rehearsals, chamber music coaching and masterclasses, rounded off by public concerts. After Mallnitz and Heiligenblut, the 2026 music week was held in Salzburg for the first time, with a closing concert in Vienna.
In 2024 Camerata Prima Wien made its debut in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Musikverein. Entry to the programme is through the national prima la musica competition or through international competition successes.
