Baroque music by musicians of the Vienna Symphony · since 1989
Biography
The Baroque Ensemble of the Vienna Symphony was founded in 1989 to present a series of demanding Baroque music at the Bregenz Festival in the Baroque church of Maria Bildstein. The concerts have been among the festival’s most popular events ever since.
The ensemble brings together musicians of the Vienna Symphony: strings and harpsichord, joined by trumpet and oboe depending on the programme. Handel, Bach and their contemporaries form the core of the repertoire, alongside sacred programmes.
Since February 2004 the Baroque Ensemble has appeared every year at the Baroque pilgrimage church Maria in der Tanne in Triberg in the Black Forest, where its first CD was also recorded. Fifteen further recordings followed up to 2019 and have been broadcast on Ö1, Radio Vorarlberg, Bayerischer Rundfunk and Deutschlandfunk.
In September 2015 ARD broadcast the ensemble’s recording of Handel’s “Water Music” in its Nachtkonzert. In May 2016 the ensemble played the closing concert of the Beijing May Festival at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, recorded by Chinese television.
In 2018 radio klassik Stephansdom named the CD “Ave Maria” its CD of the Week and Radio Maria its CD of the Month. In 2022 the ensemble appeared at the Musiksommer St. Leonhard and at the Weltmuseum Wien as part of the festival “Wir sind Wien”.
The Baroque Ensemble of the Vienna Symphony is known for its interpretations of Baroque music and contributes to the cultivation of this repertoire through its concerts and recordings.
